Andy Kaufman

Andrew Geoffrey Kaufman was an American entertainer and performance artist known for his unconventional approach to comedy. He rejected traditional joke-telling and comedy routines, emphasizing entertainment over humor. Kaufman's performances often blurred the lines between comedy and performance art, and he was sometimes described as an anti-comedian. He gained wider recognition in 1975 when he appeared on the first season of Saturday Night Live, performing as his character Foreign Man. This persona served as the basis for his role as Latka Gravas on the television series Taxi, which he played from 1978 to 1983. Throughout his career, Kaufman performed in comedy clubs and theaters, often adopting multiple personas, including the obnoxiously rude lounge singer Tony Clifton. He was a frequent guest on sketch comedy and late-night talk shows, notably Late Night with David Letterman. In 1982, he staged a professional wrestling heel act involving a staged altercation with Jerry The King Lawler, which was kept secret for over a decade. Kaufman died of lung cancer at the age of 35 on May 16, 1984. Known for his elaborate pranks and performance-based approach, rumors persist that he faked his death as part of his art. His legacy includes a reputation for his diverse character work and his willingness to provoke and confuse audiences.
