Anne Frank

Annelies Marie Frank was a German-born Jewish diarist and Holocaust victim known for her posthumously published diary that documents her life during the German occupation of the Netherlands. Born in Frankfurt in 1929, she moved to Amsterdam with her family in 1934 after the rise of Adolf Hitler. Following the occupation of the Netherlands, her family became trapped in Amsterdam and lost their German citizenship in 1941, rendering them stateless. In July 1942, as persecution intensified, the family went into hiding in a secret annex behind a bookcase within the building where Anne's father, Otto Frank, worked. They remained in hiding until their arrest by the Gestapo in August 1944. After their arrest, the Franks were transported to concentration camps, with Anne and her sister Margot transferred from Auschwitz to Bergen-Belsen, where they died of presumed typhus in early 1945. Otto Frank was the sole survivor of the family and returned to Amsterdam after the war. He discovered that Anne’s diary had been preserved by his secretaries. Moved by his daughter’s wish to become an author, he published her diary in 1947, which was translated into numerous languages and became one of the most-discussed accounts of Holocaust victims. Her diary, titled The Diary of a Young Girl, has inspired multiple plays and films, and remains one of the most well-known personal accounts of the Holocaust.
