Barack Obama

Barack Hussein Obama II, born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, is an American politician who served as the 44th president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. He is a member of the Democratic Party and was the first African American to hold the office of president. Prior to his presidency, Obama served as a U.S. senator representing Illinois from 2005 to 2008 and as an Illinois state senator from 1997 to 2004. He graduated from Columbia University in 1983 and worked as a community organizer in Chicago. In 1988, he enrolled at Harvard Law School, where he was the first Black president of the Harvard Law Review. Subsequently, Obama became a civil rights attorney and an academic, teaching constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. Elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996, he held the position until 2004, when he successfully ran for the U.S. Senate. During his presidency, Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize and implemented significant legislation including health care reform and the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. His administration responded to the 2008 financial crisis with measures such as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. He oversaw the end of the Iraq War, ordered the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, and authorized military interventions in Libya and Iraq. Obama was re-elected in 2012, during which he championed issues such as climate change, gun control, and LGBTQ rights. He left office in 2017 and remains active politically, including campaigning for candidates and publishing influential books. His presidential center opened on the South Side of Chicago in 2026, and he is highly ranked among U.S. presidents in historical assessments.
