Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin was an American polymath and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Born in the Province of Massachusetts Bay, he became a successful newspaper editor and printer in Philadelphia, publishing The Pennsylvania Gazette at age 23. Franklin was also known for publishing Poor Richard's Almanack under the pseudonym Richard Saunders and for his association with the Pennsylvania Chronicle, a newspaper known for revolutionary sentiments. He pioneered the founding of the Academy and College of Philadelphia, which later became the University of Pennsylvania, and served as its first president. Franklin organized and served as the first secretary of the American Philosophical Society, later becoming its president. He was appointed deputy postmaster-general for the British colonies in 1753, establishing the first national communications network. Franklin was active in community, colonial, state, national, and international affairs, gaining prominence as an agent in London who helped repeal the Stamp Act. As a diplomat, he was the first U.S. ambassador to France and played a key role in securing French aid during the American Revolution. From 1785 to 1788, Franklin served as President of Pennsylvania. His early ownership of slaves and subsequent advocacy against slavery reflect his evolving stance on the issue. As a scientist, Franklin made significant contributions to the study of electricity, charted the Gulf Stream, and invented several devices including the lightning rod, bifocals, glass harmonica, and Franklin stove. He founded civic organizations such as the Library Company and Philadelphia's first fire department. Recognized for campaigning for colonial unity, Franklin signed the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Paris, and the U.S. Constitution. His legacy endures as a key figure in American history and the Enlightenment.
