Bruce J. Caldwell, born in 1952, is an American historian of economics and a research professor at Duke University. He serves as the director of the Center for the Study of the History of Political Economy at Duke, where he focuses on the history and philosophy of economics. Caldwell is also recognized as the general editor of the Collected Works of F. A. Hayek at the University of Chicago. He has contributed significantly to the study of Friedrich A. Hayek, with his work including editing The Road to Serfdom: Text and Documents - The Definitive Edition and authoring two biographies of Hayek, one of which, Hayek: A Life, 1899-1950, co-authored with Hansjoerg Klausinger, was named a Best Book of the Year by The Economist in 2022 and received the Joseph J. Spengler Prize in 2023. Caldwell earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1979. Prior to his current position, he was the Joe Rosenthal Excellence Professor of Economics at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His academic work includes over ten books and fifty scholarly articles on the history and philosophy of economics. Caldwell has held fellowships at institutions including New York University, the London School of Economics, the Hoover Institution, and Clare Hall, Cambridge, where he is a Life Fellow. His research interests have historically encompassed twentieth-century philosophy of science and economic methodology, and he has been actively involved in the scholarly community as a former president and distinguished fellow of the Southern Economic Association and the History of Economics Society.
