Charlie Baker

Charlie Baker is the founding editor of The Fence. He is an American politician and the sixth president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, a position he has held since 2023. Baker served as the 72nd governor of Massachusetts from 2015 to 2023 and has been involved in various governmental roles, including two cabinet positions under preceding governors. He also spent ten years as the CEO of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, a nonprofit health benefits company, after working in government for eight years. Raised in Needham, Massachusetts, Baker earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1979 and later completed an MBA at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. His government service includes roles such as Massachusetts Undersecretary of Health and Human Services and Secretary of Health and Human Services under Governor Bill Weld, as well as Secretary of Administration and Finance under Weld and Governor Paul Cellucci. Baker left the public sector to lead Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. He briefly served as a selectman of Swampscott and considered running for Massachusetts governor in 2006. In 2009, he resigned to seek the governorship on a platform of fiscal conservatism and cultural liberalism but was defeated in the 2010 election. He ran again in 2014, narrowly winning against Martha Coakley, and was reelected in 2018 with a substantial majority. Baker announced he would not seek reelection in 2022 and was succeeded by his lieutenant governor. His leadership expanded into sports administration when he was named NCAA president in December 2022.
