David Gaub McCullough (July 7, 1933 – August 7, 2022) was an American popular historian and author. He was a two-time winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006, which is the highest civilian honor in the United States. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, McCullough earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from Yale University. His first book was The Johnstown Flood, published in 1968, and he authored ten more works on a variety of topics including Harry S. Truman, John Adams, Theodore Roosevelt, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Panama Canal, and the Wright brothers. McCullough's work extended into narration and television, as he narrated numerous documentaries including Ken Burns' The Civil War, and contributed to the 2003 film Seabiscuit. He also hosted the PBS television documentary series American Experience for twelve years. His books Truman and John Adams, which each won Pulitzer Prizes, were adapted into television films and miniseries by HBO. Throughout his career, McCullough was recognized for his ability to popularize American history through accessible and engaging narratives.
