Jesse Donald Knotts was an American actor and comedian born in West Virginia. He served in the United States Army during the 1940s and participated in World War II. While enlisted, he developed his skills as a ventriloquist and comedian through a G.I. variety show called Stars and Gripes. After his military service, Knotts began his television career with a role on the soap opera Search for Tomorrow, where he appeared from 1953 to 1955. He gained recognition as part of the repertory company on Steve Allen's variety show, notably playing an extremely nervous man in mock interviews. Knotts made his film debut in 1958 with the adaptation of No Time for Sergeants. He is best known for his portrayal of Deputy Sheriff Barney Fife on the 1960s sitcom The Andy Griffith Show, a role that earned him five Emmy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Comedy. This role contributed to his widespread fame and became a defining part of his career, leading to appearances on other shows, including The Joey Bishop Show and Return to Mayberry. In addition to television, Knotts starred in several comedic films, including The Incredible Mr. Limpet and The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. From 1979 to 1984, he played Ralph Furley on the sitcom Three's Company. Can I switch plans later?
Yes, at any time. Upgrades take effect immediately; downgrades apply at the end of the current billing period. Contact support if you need help migrating between plan families.
Do you offer a free trial?
