Countess Elizabeth Báthory of Ecsed was a Hungarian noblewoman born on 7 August 1560 and died on 21 August 1614. She was a member of the powerful House of Báthory, which owned land in the Kingdom of Hungary. Báthory is known for allegations that she and four of her servants tortured and killed hundreds of girls and women between 1590 and 1610. She was charged with 80 counts of murder and was convicted. Her accomplices were tried and executed, while Báthory was imprisoned within the Castle of Csejte until her death. The accusations against her were supported by testimony from over 300 individuals, some of whom described physical evidence and the discovery of mutilated bodies at her arrest. Some scholars believe that the charges may have been fabricated or exaggerated to undermine her family's influence, which posed a threat to regional political interests including those of the Habsburg empire. Over time, stories about Báthory entered folklore, with legends suggesting she had vampiric tendencies, such as bathing in the blood of virgins to preserve her youth. These tales originated from rumors and were recorded as factual more than a century after her death. Although some historians suggest her story may have inspired Bram Stoker's novel Dracula, there is no direct evidence supporting this connection. Can I switch plans later?
Yes, at any time. Upgrades take effect immediately; downgrades apply at the end of the current billing period. Contact support if you need help migrating between plan families.
