Henry Kissinger

Henry Alfred Kissinger (May 27, 1923 – November 29, 2023) was an American diplomat, political scientist, and politician. He served as the 7th national security advisor from 1969 to 1975 and as the 56th United States secretary of state from 1973 to 1977, working under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. Born in Germany, Kissinger emigrated to the United States in 1938 as a Jewish refugee fleeing Nazi persecution. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. After the war, he attended Harvard University, where he excelled academically and later became a professor of government. Renowned as an expert on nuclear weapons and foreign policy, he acted as a consultant to government agencies, think tanks, and presidential campaigns including those of Nelson Rockefeller and Richard Nixon before being appointed to key government positions. Known for his pragmatic approach to geopolitics, often called Realpolitik, Kissinger was involved in developing policies such as détente with the Soviet Union, initiating diplomatic relations with China, and engaging in shuttle diplomacy to end conflicts like the Yom Kippur War. His career is also associated with U.S. policies that included military interventions and support for authoritarian regimes, leading to accusations of war crimes. Following his government service, Kissinger founded Kissinger Associates, a geopolitical consulting firm, and authored numerous books on diplomatic history and international relations.
