Ingrid Newkirk

Ingrid Elizabeth Newkirk, born on June 11, 1949, is a British and American animal rights activist and author. She is the co-founder and President of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which was established in March 1980. Alongside fellow activist Alex Pacheco, Newkirk helped to shape the organization's focus on advocating for animal rights and ending their use in various industries. The organization's early campaigns gained public attention during the 1981 Silver Spring monkeys case, when Pacheco documented experiments on macaque monkeys inside a Maryland laboratory. This incident resulted in the first police raid on an animal research facility in the United States and led to an amendment to the Animal Welfare Act in 1985. Throughout her leadership at PETA, Newkirk has spearheaded campaigns to eliminate animal testing in cosmetics and other industries, organized undercover investigations that prompted government sanctions, and advocated against the use of animals in crash tests. She has attracted criticism for her support of actions linked to the Animal Liberation Front and for PETA’s euthanasia practices, including the killing of healthy pets taken into its shelters.
