J. Robert Oppenheimer was an American theoretical physicist known for his leadership during the development of the first nuclear weapons. The bombs were later used in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, marking the only wartime deployment of nuclear weapons. After the war, Oppenheimer served as director of the Institute for Advanced Study and chaired the General Advisory Committee of the Atomic Energy Commission. He advocated for international control of nuclear technology, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and voiced concerns about the arms race. During the Red Scare, his past associations led to a security hearing and the revocation of his security clearance in 1954, a decision that was vacated in 2022. Oppenheimer continued his work in physics until his death in 1967, receiving numerous honors for his contributions.
