About Jeremy
Jeremy Asher Dauber is a scholar specializing in Yiddish and Jewish literature, American Jewish culture, and American studies. He is the Atran Professor of Yiddish Language, Literature, and Culture in the Department of Germanic Languages at Columbia University. Since 2008, he has served as the director of the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies at Columbia and is an inaugural member of the Shalom Hartman Institute North American Scholars Circle. Dauber's research interests encompass Yiddish literature of the early modern period, Hebrew and Yiddish literature of the nineteenth century, the Yiddish theater, and the history of Jewish comedy. He earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard College in 1995 with summa cum laude honors and completed his doctoral work at Oxford University. Dauber has written on television and movies for the Christian Science Monitor, with his work recognized by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. He also wrote the libretto for an opera performed in Boston and authored a movie screened at the Cannes Film Market. Born in Teaneck, New Jersey, he attended Yavneh Academy and the Frisch School. Dauber is also a co-editor of the journal Prooftexts: A Journal of Jewish Literary History and has been involved in projects such as managing the compilation of the 100 greatest works of modern Jewish literature for the National Yiddish Book Center.
