Joe Biden

Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. is an American former politician who served as the 46th president of the United States from 2021 to 2025. A member of the Democratic Party, he represented Delaware in the United States Senate from 1973 to 2009 and served as the 47th vice president under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Biden graduated from the University of Delaware in 1965 and from the Syracuse University College of Law in 1968. He was elected to the New Castle County Council in 1970 and to the U.S. Senate in 1972. During his senate tenure, Biden chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Foreign Relations Committee, and he drafted legislation such as the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act and the Violence Against Women Act. He oversaw six Supreme Court confirmation hearings, including those for Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas. Biden opposed the Gulf War in 1991 but supported the Iraq War Resolution in 2002. He ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988 and 2008, and was chosen as Barack Obama's running mate in 2008, serving as a close advisor during his vice presidency. As president, Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act and various bipartisan bills on infrastructure and manufacturing. He proposed the Build Back Better Act, parts of which became law through the Inflation Reduction Act. Biden appointed Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court and shifted U.S. foreign policy by rejoining the Paris Agreement, withdrawing troops from Afghanistan, and supporting Ukraine amid the Russian invasion. His administration was marked by a focus on international alliances, military aid, and diplomatic efforts. Concerns about Biden's age and health persisted, particularly as he was the oldest person to serve as president, and he withdrew from the 2024 presidential race after initial plans to run for reelection. During his tenure, his administration was generally ranked favorably by historians and scholars despite fluctuating approval ratings.
