John Christie

John Reginald Halliday Christie was an English serial killer and serial rapist active during the 1940s and early 1950s. He was responsible for the murders of at least eight people, including his wife Ethel, whom he strangled in his flat at 10 Rillington Place, Notting Hill, London. The bodies of three victims were discovered in a wallpaper-covered kitchen alcove shortly after he moved out of Rillington Place in March 1953. Additionally, the remains of two victims were found in the garden, and his wife's body was located beneath the floorboards in the front room. Christie was convicted of and hanged for his wife's murder. Among his victims were Beryl Evans and her baby daughter Geraldine, who, along with Beryl's husband Timothy Evans, were tenants at 10 Rillington Place during 1948–49. Timothy Evans was initially charged with both murders and was hanged in 1950, with Christie serving as a key prosecution witness. The discovery of Christie's crimes three years later cast serious doubt on Evans's conviction, leading to the acknowledgment that Evans did not commit the murders of his wife or daughter. Christie later admitted to killing Beryl Evans but not Geraldine. The incident highlighted issues of police mishandling and miscarriages of justice, and in 2004, the High Court formally recognized that Timothy Evans was innocent of the crimes he was executed for.
