Liz Truss

Mary Elizabeth Truss, born on 26 July 1975, is a British politician who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party for a brief period in 2022. She was the Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk from 2010 to 2024 and held various Cabinet positions under three prime ministers, including David Cameron, Theresa May, and Boris Johnson. Her most recent role was as foreign secretary from 2021 to 2022, during which she led negotiations on the Northern Ireland Protocol and responded to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Truss studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Merton College, Oxford, where she was president of the Oxford University Liberal Democrats. She joined the Conservative Party in 1996 and worked at Royal Dutch Shell, Cable & Wireless, and as deputy director of the think tank Reform. After two unsuccessful campaigns for Parliament, she was elected as the MP for South West Norfolk in 2010. As a backbencher, she advocated for reforms in areas such as the economy, childcare, and education. She co-founded the Free Enterprise Group of Conservative MPs and contributed to several publications, including After the Coalition and Britannia Unchained. Throughout her career, Truss served in multiple government roles, notably as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Childcare and Education, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor, and Chief Secretary to the Treasury. She supported Brexit after the 2016 referendum and was appointed Secretary of State for International Trade and Minister for Women and Equalities under Boris Johnson. Her tenure as Prime Minister was marked by a government crisis, a mini-budget that caused financial instability, and her subsequent resignation in October 2022. She spent the following years on the backbenches and lost her seat in the 2024 general election.
