Michelle Ford

Michelle Jan Ford, born on 15 July 1962, is an Australian former long-distance freestyle and butterfly swimmer active during the 1970s and 1980s. She achieved notable success at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, where she won a gold medal in the 800-metre freestyle, making her the only non-Eastern Bloc female swimmer to claim an individual gold medal at those games. She also earned a bronze in the 200-metre butterfly and finished fourth in the 400-metre freestyle. Throughout her career, Ford set two world records and became the first Australian woman to win individual Olympic medals in two different specialised strokes. Raised in the seaside Sydney suburb of Sans Souci, Ford grew up with swim-related influences; her father had narrowly missed Olympic selection as a yachtsman. She learned to swim at age six and at twelve set a national record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 61.5 seconds. At the age of 13, she broke multiple state and national records, including those previously held by Olympic gold medallist Shane Gould. Her achievements included winning at the Australian Championships and setting a Commonwealth record in the 200-metre butterfly. Ford competed in the 1976 Montreal Olympics at a young age and later shifted her focus to distance freestyle swimming, setting national records in the 400-metre and 800-metre freestyle events. She claimed gold in the 200-metre butterfly and collected medals at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. Her training and competition pursuits took her to Nashville, Tennessee, where she trained under Don Talbot.
