Nick Griffin

Nicholas John Griffin, born on March 1, 1959, in Barnet, is a British politician associated with far-right political movements. He served as chairman of the British National Party from 1999 to 2014 and was a Member of the European Parliament representing North West England from 2009 to 2014. In July 2014, he became the president of the BNP but was expelled from the party in October of the same year. Griffin’s political career began early; he joined the National Front at age 14 and later studied at the University of Cambridge, where he became a political worker for the party. By 1980, he was part of the governing body of the National Front and contributed articles to right-wing magazines. He contested elections as a candidate for the National Front in Croydon North West in 1981 and 1983 before departing from the party in 1989. In 1995, Griffin joined the BNP and ascended to its leadership in 1999, standing as a candidate in various elections. His tenure as an MEP began after being elected in the 2009 European elections. Griffin’s career has been marked by legal controversies; he was convicted in 1998 for distributing material likely to incite racial hatred, receiving a suspended sentence, and was acquitted in 2006 of other charges related to inciting racial hatred. Throughout his career, he has faced criticism for his remarks on various political, social, ethical, and religious topics. Since 2018, Griffin has served as vice-president of the Alliance for Peace and Freedom.
