Nick Land

Nick Land is an English philosopher known for popularising the ideology of accelerationism. His work has contributed to the development of speculative realism and is characterized by a departure from traditional academic conventions, incorporating unorthodox and esoteric influences. Land's writings have been compiled in the 2011 collection Fanged Noumena. In the 1990s, he was closely associated with the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit, a collective co-founded at the University of Warwick by Land and cyberfeminist philosopher Sadie Plant. During this period, Land's influences included post-structuralist theory, leftist thinkers such as Bataille, Marx, and Deleuze & Guattari, as well as science fiction, rave culture, and the occult. He also coined the term hyperstition to describe memetic ideas that tend to bring about their own reality. Land resigned from Warwick in 1998 and experienced personal struggles, including a period of amphetamine abuse and a breakdown in the early 2000s, after which he disappeared from public view. He later relocated to Shanghai and re-emerged as a figure aligned with the political right, becoming a foundational thinker in the movement known as the Dark Enlightenment. His recent writings explore anti-egalitarian and anti-democratic ideas, reflecting his shift towards reactionary political thought.
