Pierre Marcel Poilievre, born on June 3, 1979, is a Canadian politician who has served as the leader of the Conservative Party and the leader of the Official Opposition since 2022. He has been a member of Parliament for Battle River;Crowfoot since August 2025, representing this riding after losing his seat in Carleton in April 2025. Poilievre was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, and moved to Ottawa in 2000 to work for Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day. He was first elected in the 2004 federal election, initially representing Nepean;Carleton before its reconfiguration to Carleton. In 2008, he earned a bachelor's degree in international relations from the University of Calgary. During Prime Minister Stephen Harper's tenure, Poilievre held various parliamentary secretary roles from 2006 to 2013 and served as minister for democratic reform from 2013 to 2015. In 2015, he was also minister of employment and social development. From 2017 to 2022, he was the Conservative Party's shadow minister for finance and briefly for jobs and industry. Poilievre won the leadership of the Conservative Party in the 2022 leadership election in a landslide. As opposition leader, his policy focus has included reducing the budget deficit, lowering personal income taxes, defunding the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and repealing federal environmental laws such as the carbon tax. He is associated with the Blue Tory faction within the party and is characterized as a populist. Poilievre led the Conservative Party in the 2025 federal election, where his party increased its seat count and share of the popular vote, but he lost his individual seat in Carleton. He subsequently won a by-election in Battle River;Crowfoot.
