Russell T Davies

Stephen Russell Davies, born on 27 April 1963 in Swansea, is a Welsh screenwriter and television producer known for his influential work in British television. He initially aspired to be a comic artist before transitioning to playwriting and screenwriting. After graduating from Oxford University, Davies began his career at the BBC's children's department, CBBC, in 1985. He created two series, Dark Season and Century Falls, during his time there. Later, he joined Granada Television and started writing adult drama in 1994, exploring themes of religion and sexuality through works such as Revelations, Springhill, and The Grand. His experiences in the Manchester gay scene inspired Queer as Folk, a series that brought LGBTQ themes to television. In the 2000s, he produced notable series including Bob & Rose, The Second Coming, and Casanova. Davies is best known for reviving Doctor Who in 2005, where he served as showrunner and head writer until 2010 and again from 2023 to 2025. His tenure marked a surge in the show's popularity and the creation of spin-offs such as Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. In recognition of his contributions, he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2008. During his career, Davies has also co-created series like Wizards vs Aliens and created others including Cucumber, Banana, and Tofu. His later work includes adaptations of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the miniseries A Very English Scandal, and Years and Years. He has had a significant impact on contemporary British television through his storytelling and showrunning roles.
