Todd Haynes

Todd Haynes is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer born on January 2, 1961. His work is recognized for its exploration of melodrama, historical pastiche, and queer cinema, often addressing the emotional and psychological impacts of social repression relating to sexuality, identity, illness, and conformity. Throughout his career spanning more than four decades, Haynes has been associated with the New Queer Cinema movement of the early 1990s and is known for reinterpreting classical Hollywood genres such as the woman’s picture and the biopic to shed light on marginalized experiences and unspoken desires. Haynes gained initial public attention with his controversial short film Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story in 1987, which used Barbie dolls to depict the life and death of singer Karen Carpenter, becoming a cult classic. His feature directorial debut, Poison in 1991, was a provocative film that examined AIDS-era perceptions and garnered the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. His subsequent films, including Safe and Velvet Goldmine, received critical acclaim and various awards, such as Safe being voted the best film of the 1990s by The Village Voice Film Poll and Velvet Goldmine receiving the Special Jury Prize at Cannes. Haynes achieved further recognition with the film Far from Heaven in 2002, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. His career continued with acclaimed films such as I'm Not There, Carol, Wonderstruck, Dark Waters, and May December.
