Tony Abbott

Anthony John Abbott is an Australian politician who served as the 28th prime minister of Australia from 2013 to 2015 and is affiliated with the Liberal Party. Born in England, he studied economics and law at the University of Sydney and attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Prior to his political career, Abbott trained briefly for the priesthood and worked in journalism and political advisory roles. He entered parliament in 1994 representing the New South Wales division of Warringah and held various ministerial positions during the Howard government, including roles related to health and ageing. Abbott challenged Malcolm Turnbull for party leadership in 2009 and subsequently became leader of the Coalition, leading the party through the 2010 federal election and securing a landslide victory in the 2013 election. As prime minister, Abbott’s government implemented policies such as the repeal of the carbon pricing scheme and the mining tax, introduced budget austerity measures, and launched initiatives including the Medical Research Future Fund and trade agreements with China, Japan, and South Korea.
