Vincent Price

Vincent Leonard Price Jr. (May 27, 1911 – October 25, 1993) was an American actor renowned for his work in the horror genre, often portraying villains. He appeared in over 100 films, on stage, television, and radio throughout his career. Price's early stage work included a stint with the Mercury Theatre, and his first film role was as a leading man in the 1938 comedy Service de Luxe. He later became known as a character actor with notable appearances in films such as The Song of Bernadette, Laura, Leave Her to Heaven, Dragonwyck, The Three Musketeers, and The Ten Commandments. He specialized in horror roles with prominent parts in House of Wax, The Fly, House on Haunted Hill, Return of the Fly, The Tingler, The Last Man on Earth, Witchfinder General, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, and Theatre of Blood. Price collaborated frequently with Roger Corman on Edgar Allan Poe adaptations including House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Haunted Palace, and The Masque of the Red Death. He also appeared on television, notably portraying Egghead on the series Batman, and voiced Professor Ratigan in Disney's The Great Mouse Detective. His acting career extended into later years with a role in Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands. Price earned multiple lifetime achievement awards from various organizations for his contributions to cinema. Outside of acting, he was an art collector, arts consultant, lecturer, and author on art topics. He also pursued interests in gourmet cooking and authored cookbooks. The Vincent Price Art Museum at East Los Angeles College is named in his honor.
