Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter known for his influential contributions to Western art. Over a period of just more than a decade, he produced approximately 2,100 artworks, including about 860 oil paintings, many of which were created in his final two years. His work encompasses landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and self-portraits, characterized by bold colors and expressive, impulsive brushwork. These qualities helped lay the groundwork for modern art. Born into an upper-middle-class family, van Gogh was a serious, quiet, and thoughtful child who drew from an early age. As a young man, he worked as an art dealer and traveled frequently, but he became depressed after being transferred to London. He then turned to religion and worked as a Protestant missionary in southern Belgium. After experiencing ill health and solitude, he took up painting in 1881. His early works focused on still lifes and depictions of peasant laborers, with a subdued color palette. In 1886, Van Gogh moved to Paris where he encountered avant-garde artists and began to develop his distinctive style, especially during his time in Arles in 1888, where he created series of works featuring olive trees, wheat fields, and sunflowers. Throughout his life, he struggled with mental illness, suffering psychotic episodes and delusions, which contributed to his tragic death by suicide at the age of 37. During his lifetime, he was largely unrecognized and regarded as a madman, but after his death, his reputation grew, influencing subsequent art movements and cementing his legacy as a tortured yet genius artist.
