W. E. B. Du Bois

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was an American sociologist, writer, historian, and civil rights activist known for his leadership in the fight against racial discrimination. He was a founder and editor of The Crisis, the official publication of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Du Bois played a key role in the organization and was a prominent advocate for full civil rights and political representation for African Americans. His support for racial uplift emphasized the importance of higher education and leadership among African Americans, a concept he termed the talented tenth. As a leader of the Niagara Movement, he opposed the Atlanta Compromise and emphasized the need for equality and challenging segregation. Du Bois also engaged with Pan-Africanism, helping organize Pan-African Congresses aimed at advocating for the independence of African colonies from European powers. Throughout his life, he traveled extensively to Europe, Africa, and Asia, actively participating in international movements. His writings addressed issues such as lynching, Jim Crow laws, and racial discrimination, and his work The Souls of Black Folk is considered a seminal text in African-American literature. His 1935 book Black Reconstruction in America challenged orthodox views on the Reconstruction era. An early advocate of sociological analysis, his autobiography Dusk of Dawn is regarded as one of the first scientific treatises in American sociology. In addition to his advocacy and scholarly work, Du Bois was involved in peace activism after World War II and was targeted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for his socialist sympathies. He spent his final years in Ghana, where he died in 1963.
