Will Rogers

William Penn Adair Rogers, born on November 4, 1879, was an American vaudeville performer, actor, and humorous social commentator known as Oklahoma's Favorite Son. Born as a citizen of the Cherokee Nation in what is now Oklahoma, Rogers built a diverse career that spanned three decades. He performed in vaudeville, where his rope act led to appearances in the Ziegfeld Follies, and he subsequently secured multiple film contracts, appearing in a total of 71 films, including silent movies and talkies. As an accomplished humorist and writer, Rogers authored more than 4,000 syndicated newspaper columns and gained further popularity through radio broadcasts. His comedic style, characterized by earthy anecdotes and a folksy tone, enabled him to satirize various topics such as gangsters, prohibition, politicians, and government programs without offending the general audience. Rogers was an ardent advocate for aviation expansion and used his extensive world travels to provide Americans with firsthand accounts. His wit and aphorisms, such as the famous phrase 'I never met a man I didn't like,' resonated widely. Rogers often expressed pride in his ability to joke about prominent figures of his time while maintaining a reputation of kindness. His life was tragically cut short in 1935 when he died in a plane crash near Utqiaġvik, Alaska, alongside aviator Wiley Post.
