William Godwin

William Godwin was an English journalist, political philosopher, and novelist born on March 3, 1756. He is recognized as one of the first exponents of utilitarianism and is regarded as the first modern proponent of anarchism. Godwin gained prominence through two significant works published within a year of each other: An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, which critically examined political institutions, and Things as They Are; or, The Adventures of Caleb Williams, an early mystery novel that critiques aristocratic privilege. These publications established him as a leading figure in the radical circles of London during the 1790s. Throughout his life, Godwin wrote extensively in the genres of novels, history, and demography. He was also connected to prominent figures of the era; he married feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft in 1797 and authored a candid biography of her after her death from childbirth. Their daughter, Mary Shelley, became a notable novelist known for Frankenstein and married poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. With his second wife, Mary Jane Clairmont, Godwin founded The Juvenile Library, contributing to children's literature through original works, translations, and publications. His influence extends into British literature and literary culture, with later figures such as anarchist theorist Peter Kropotkin recognizing him as a precursor of anarchist communism.
