2G1C (E130) - Hospital Horror, No Grades, Prayer Bans & Flock Surveillance
On today’s 2G1C Podcast, I start with a frightening story out of Nashville that should have every patient asking serious questions about hospital safety. ROUTINE SURGERY — CATASTROPHIC MEDICATION ERROR At Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown in Nashville, at least four patients undergoing routine joint-replacement procedures were harmed after a medication error. Families say patients received potassium instead of the intended anesthetic or pain medication, with two patients reportedly left paralyzed and one remaining in intensive care. One of those patients, 72-year-old Glenda Dorton, went in for what should have been a routine knee replacement and was left paralyzed from the chest down, according to her family. The hospital has apologized, reported the incident to state regulators, launched an investigation and says additional safety safeguards have now been put in place. The incident is also under investigation by Tennessee authorities. How does something this catastrophic happen inside a hospital? How does the wrong medication make it far enough through the system to be administered to multiple patients? Where were the safeguards that were supposed to prevent exactly this kind of mistake? And most importantly, who is going to be held accountable for lives that may have been changed forever? This is my top story, and I dig into what happened, what the hospital is saying, and the questions every patient and family should be asking. Then I head to Michigan, a state that somehow keeps finding new ways to make you wonder what the hell is happening. NO GRADES, NO HURT FEELINGS? I discuss controversial grading changes being pushed within higher education and the growing movement away from traditional grades, deadlines and academic consequences. College used to be where young adults were challenged, tested and prepared for the real world. Now are we creating an education system where everyone passes, nobody fails and, most importantly, nobody gets their feelings hurt? What happens when these students graduate and discover their employer doesn’t hand out participation trophies? I have plenty to say clinic? Not so fast. I discuss New Jersey policies surrounding reproductive-health facilities, Governor Mikie Sherrill, and the growing concern that government restrictions designed around “access” and “safety” can cross the line into restricting constitutionally protected speech and religious expression. FLOCK CAMERAS: SAFETY OR SURVEILLANCE? And then there’s Flock Safety. The company wants Americans to believe its massive network of automated license-plate readers is simply about catching criminals and protecting communities. Great. But what happens when cameras can track where ordinary Americans drive, when they arrive, where they leave and potentially build a searchable history of their movements? Flock’s leadership says privacy matters. I say: prove it. Because “trust us, it’s for your safety” has become one of the most dangerous sentences government and Big Tech can utter. Where is the line between legitimate law enforcement technology and mass surveillance? Who has access to the information? How long is it stored? Who is searching it? And what happens when technology created to catch criminals starts tracking everybody else? I dig into it. So buckle up. 2G1C is back. And every one of you is invited along for the ride. Real Talk.
