4 Fit Fatherhood
Given 11 Months to Live: A Father’s Fight to Be There | Dale Atkinson
What happens to the way you see fatherhood when a doctor tells you that you may have less than a year to live? Dale Atkinson was working 14 to 16-hour days, building his career and providing for his family when life changed fast. Within weeks, his partner underwent surgery for lung cancer, his mother passed away, and Dale was diagnosed with Stage IV esophageal cancer. He was told his cancer was inoperable and incurable, with a prognosis of roughly 11½ months with treatment. Dale responded by becoming deeply involved in his own care, asking questions, researching his options, building a medical team, and refusing to become passive. But this conversation became about fatherhood. Dale talks openly about realizing that he knew what his children’s laughter sounded like through the wall because he was spending so much time working. He shares why 20 uninterrupted minutes with your kids can matter more than another hour at the office, why he schedules family time like an appointment, and how his diagnosis changed what success means to him. We also talk about: • The difference between providing for your family and being present with them • Why waiting for life to “slow down” is a trap • Giving your kids 20 minutes of completely undistracted attention • Talking honestly with young children about hard things • How Dale’s family turned cancer into “Dave” and chemotherapy into “superhero medicine” • Teaching your children to ask questions and think for themselves • Agency, self-advocacy, and standing your ground • Why Dale says his sons became his reason to fight • The beer he has promised to share with his son at 16 This conversation is a reminder every father needs: Your fatherhood is their childhood.
