Never Looking Back: Ross McGregor on Grief, Grit & European Gold
Aug 19, 20262 hourS1
Send us Fan Mail Welcome back to the podcast, its been a minute Before standing atop the European triathlon podium, Ross McGregor was tearing up beaches in the high-adrenaline world of sand racing . Triathlon wasn’t anywhere on his radar—until a tragic loss prompted him to enter his very first event for charity. That single race transformed his life. Ross traded horse-power and throttle for pedal power and human endurance, hanging up his sand-racing boots and never looking back at a motorbike again. In this powerful episode, the 35–39 Great Britain Age-Group European Champion shares how he redirected his competitive grit from the sand tracks to the triathlon circuit. He opens up about turning personal tragedy into elite purpose, breaking down the exact mindset, training consistency, and race-day tactics that carried him all the way to European Gold. In this episode, we cover: The Shift from Sand to Asphalt: Transitioning from high-octane sand racing to endurance sport following a life-altering tragedy. The Origin Spark: How one charity triathlon set off a journey to the top of European age-group racing. The Champion's Mindset: Transferring raw competitive drive into swim, bike, and run mastery. Podium Execution: Actionable advice on training volume, pacing strategy, and mental toughness for age-groupers. "Running Out of Excuses: Blenheim to Team GB with Kev Appleton"
Jul 22, 20261h 7mS1
Send us Fan Mail Welcome back to another episode of AMP. This episode features Kev Appleton, GB Agegrouper and fellow YouTuber. Kev says "My Triathlon Journey started in 2017 when i was persuaded to enter the Blenheim Palace Sprint Triathlon in 2018. A year of training to get from over weight and unfit to to some kind of fitness I completed taht first Sprint race and was well and truly bitten by the bug. Later in 2018 I had my second triathlon but stepped up to Standard Distance at Woburn Abbey. Over the next few years I competed in several sprint Triathlons and returned to Blenheim again in 2020 and 2021 I was soon stepping up again to 70.3 with Outlaw X, Outlaw Nottingham Half and Outlaw 70.3 Holkham, Ironman 70.3 Duisburg all completed. In 2023 we entered a Relay Team into Outlaw X with my employer Chairman and colleague we finished an amazing 3rd Place with a combined age of 167 years! Finally running out of excuses I'd entered the Outlaw Full in 2023. This was my first "Iron" Distance, wasn't to be my last though as I now "had" to do an "Ironman" race so Barcelona was the target for 2024. Earlier in 2024 as part of my training I completed Wales Long Course Weekend in Tenby. 2025 I committed to a year of Sprint Distance racing with the intention of qualifying for the age group Team in Banyoles 2026. Making the Aquathlon Team is a great honour for me and has increased the determination to qualify for Sprint and Standard distance Teams for World and European Championships in 2027" follow Kev's journey on his YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@SwimBikeRunKev Follow on instagram @nivek4628 You Can find the 1001 Triathlon Tips using this link - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0GX39Z7P5 follow us on Instagram - AMP_podcast Facebook Richard Joseph Conway Youtube - AMP GB Support the show
Send us Fan Mail Welcome back to the podcast, on this episode we chat to Alice Lucas, Alice says "My sporting background has been a little stop start. As one of two girls, my mum encouraged (pushed!) us both into ballet and dancing, which I loved socially but was a disaster at. Meanwhile, Dad was a sub 3hr marathon runner and competitive triathlete, who I idolised! I started running at 18 - primarily to lose weight - and did my first triathlon in my early 20s on my early teenage mountain bike, but came 3rd in my AG and loved it. Fast forward a decade or so, and I joined a running (with a hint of triathlon) club in London and had a couple of years of very amateur racing, with a strong running focus. 2020 was to be my year - unexpected ballot place in the London Marathon after 15 years of trying, several triathlons in the calendar, a 300km ride in Sweden and my first 70.3. Alas - 2020 was no one’s year! Sort of fell off the wagon, but moving to Bath in 2022 reignited my excitement for the sport and I joined the world’s best tri club (while I acknowledge I’m biased, I wholeheartedly believe this to be true!). Working with an equally epic PT, I set the goal of AG racing. I told anyone who would listen, and worked to overcome fear on the bike (work in progress), improve technique in the water (ditto) and speed up my run (there’s a theme here). Eventually raced my first MD last June and landed a qualifying time which took me to Alsdorf for the European MD Duathlon Champs last month, which was a sensational experience! I’m nothing if not ambitious - still have a LOT of work to do across all disciplines, a lot of kit to upgrade and many years of this sport ahead of me. But objective one unlocked, proof that mindset and psychology are huge factors in any competitive sport (and business for that matter), and game on to see how far I can take this!
