Wrong Place, Wrong Time: The Murders of James Attfield and Nahid Almanea | Ep. 279

  Sep 30, 202642 min

In March 2014, 33-year-old James Attfield was found brutally murdered in Castle Park in Colchester, Essex. Just a few months later, 31-year-old Saudi Arabian student Nahid Almanea was attacked and killed while walking along a secluded footpath on her way to the University of Essex. The two murders appeared to have little in common, but detectives soon began asking whether they could have be committed by the same perpetrator. For the people of Colchester, the possibility that a killer was randomly targeting strangers was deeply unsettling. Major police investigations were launched, hundreds of potential witnesses were spoken to, and numerous people were arrested and eliminated from the inquiry. Yet for more than a year, detectives struggled to identify the person responsible, while the fear within the local community continued to grow. In this episode of British Murders with Stuart Blues, I examine the murders of James Attfield and Nahid Almanea, their lives before they were killed, the investigations that followed both attacks, and the extraordinary discovery that would eventually bring the case to its conclusion. We look at the evidence that connected the two murders, the investigation that finally identified the killer, and the courtroom battle over his responsibility for what he had done, in a case that left the people of Colchester asking how two apparently random victims had ended up at the centre of the same terrible story. Always True Crime

The Secret in the Cellar : Episode 548

  Sep 28, 202631 min

Carol Jarvis was a woman whose life was shaped by her family and, later, by a degenerative illness which left her increasingly dependent on others. As her health deteriorated, her husband took on the role of her carer, looking after her at home as she became less able to care for herself. But behind the closed doors of the family home, things were not quite as they appeared. Carol’s children began to notice differences in their mum's condition, particularly when comparing the times she was cared for by her husband with those when they looked after her themselves. Small inconsistencies began to raise questions, but confronting their Dad was far from easy. When another woman entered the picture, the situation became even more complicated. What followed would expose a disturbing relationship, a bizarre living arrangement and a series of events which would eventually lead police to a devastating discovery inside the family home. This is the story of Carol Jarvis, the questions raised by those closest to her, and the shocking truth that eventually emerged. Episode #278

The Police Sergeant's Wife: The Murder of Madallin Jones | Ep. 278

  Sep 27, 202634 min

In January 1993, 37-year-old Madallin Jones was found dead beside a stream near Hawarden, North Wales, after what initially appeared to be a terrible road accident. But as detectives examined the scene and began looking more closely at the circumstances surrounding her death, they quickly realised that something wasn't quite right. Madallin's husband, Steven Jones, was a serving police sergeant with North Wales Police who had spent years investigating crime and training other officers. He was a respected member of his community and had even been praised for an act of bravery just days before Madallin's death, but he would soon find himself at the centre of a murder investigation led by some of the very people he had worked alongside. In this episode of British Murders with Stuart Blues, I examine the murder of Madallin Jones, her life and marriage to Steven Jones, the investigation that followed her death, and the forensic evidence that would challenge the initial explanation of what had happened. We look at the events surrounding Madallin's death, the extraordinary circumstances of the investigation, and the trial that followed, in a case where the knowledge of policing and criminal investigations would take on an especially unsettling significance.
