God's Purpose Works Good for You in Christ |Romans 8:28-39 (What Makes Christians Different, Part 6)
This episode of Ascension on Air asks a question every person eventually faces: what happens when your plans for life don't work out? Drawing from Romans 8:28-39, the message explains that faith in Christ doesn't guarantee the job, the relationship, or the outcome someone hoped for. Instead, the Bible points to something it calls God's purpose: to shape believers into the likeness of Christ through both hardship and blessing. That purpose, sealed in Christ before time began, is one Scripture says can never be broken. Key Takeaways The Bible's promise in Romans 8:28 isn't that everything happens for a nice reason — it's that God works every circumstance, painful and good alike, toward one specific purpose: making believers like Christ. God's plan was never to guarantee the ideal job or the perfect relationship; Scripture points to something bigger — being conformed to the image of Christ, sufferings and all. Because of Christ, God has already justified believers by grace — meaning Christ himself covers their sin like a robe, so no hardship a Christian faces is ever proof that God has turned against them. According to Romans 8, God's purpose for believers was set in eternity, before Christ ever revealed it in time — which is why Scripture calls it a purpose that cannot fail or be undone. The same chain of promises that begins with being called to faith in Christ ends with sharing in his glory — the suffering is real, but the gospel insists it isn't the final word. Baptism marks the point where this purpose already took hold: through the gospel, the old self died with Christ, and new life in the Spirit began for the baptized believer. Because this purpose belongs to God and not to circumstances, Scripture can say that nothing — not hardship, not death, not any power — will separate a believer from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
