Robertson, asking whether the film’s historical inaccuracies, altered characterization, DEI casting, simplified dialogue, and rejection of Bronze Age aesthetics were failures—or deliberate artistic choices. We compare Nolan’s adaptation with Homer’s original poem, Emily Wilson’s translation, Troy, and James Joyce’s Ulysses, while exploring Odysseus, xenia, blood feuds, sacrifice, justice, divine order, and the film’s radical inversion of the Homeric hero.But ultimately, we develop a deeper theory: Nolan intentionally created an ugly, disenchanted, and unromantic epic as a commentary on Hollywood, modern audiences, postwar Western civilization, and cultural decline.
