Episode #19
Will we speak different languages in heaven?
Heaven does not erase human diversity, and Scripture makes this clear from Genesis to Revelation. When God created humanity in His image, He created people in the plural, because no single person can fully reflect who He is. The diversity we see across cultures, nations, and languages is not an accident. It is a testimony to the creativity and grandeur of God Himself. When sin entered the world and humanity used their unity of language to glorify themselves at Babel, God responded by multiplying languages and scattering people across the earth. That scattering was a consequence of sin, but God remained the source of every language He gave, and what He gives, He can redeem. The redemption of language begins to come into focus at Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit enabled people from every nation to hear the gospel proclaimed in their own native tongue. God did not eliminate the different languages. He worked through them. Paul reinforces this in Galatians 3:28, making clear that coming to faith in Christ does not erase a person's nationality, culture, or language. Those things remain, but they are now united under the lordship of Jesus. The vision John receives in Revelation 7 brings this full circle, showing a great multitude from every tribe, nation, people, and language standing before the throne and worshiping the Lamb. The diversity is not gone. It is glorified. Just as God redeemed Joseph's suffering in Egypt rather than removing him from it, He redeems the languages born out of Babel rather than erasing them. In heaven, what sin produced becomes a display of God's power and grace for all eternity. Every believer praising God in their native tongue is a declaration that the gospel has overcome everything the enemy intended for destruction. The diversity of the body of Christ is not a problem to be managed. It is a preview of heaven, and it calls us to celebrate the people around us, support the spread of the gospel to every nation, and let the picture of Revelation 7 shape how we see and treat one another today.
