Episode #144
The 11th Commandment: Thou Shall Be Nice
Apparently, somewhere along the way, Christians added an 11th Commandment: Thou Shall Be Nice. In this episode of the Bible Belt Bros Podcast, Andrew and Dusty talk about the difference between being an apologist and practicing apologetics, and why Christians sometimes feel like they need to apologize for simply believing what the Bible says. Whether it's saying sorry for a personal conviction, avoiding a difficult conversation because someone might be offended, or watering down what we believe to make Christianity more acceptable, Andrew argues that we've gotten a little too comfortable apologizing for our faith. But that leads to an important question: Does standing firm in what you believe give you permission to be a jerk? Dusty pushes back on Andrew a little and asks what our motivation is when we're willing to offend someone. Are we defending biblical truth because we genuinely care about the person we're talking to, or are we just trying to win an argument? The guys talk about how easy it is for Christians to turn convictions into competitions, where our church, our lifestyle, or our interpretation becomes proof that we're somehow a "better Christian" than somebody else. The conversation eventually turns toward how Christians share their faith. Andrew makes the case that if someone tells you they don't believe the Bible, that doesn't mean you put the Bible away. Scripture isn't something Christians should be embarrassed about or apologize for using. Your testimony, experiences, and ability to relate to someone can support the conversation, but they shouldn't replace God's Word. That also opens up a discussion about churches that begin with a topic and then search for Scripture to support it, rather than beginning with Scripture and allowing it to shape the message. Andrew and Dusty talk about how one generation reacted to the "hellfire and brimstone" preaching of the generation before it, possibly swinging the pendulum too far in the opposite direction and creating a Christianity that's sometimes afraid to say anything that might make someone uncomfortable. As usual, none of this happens without plenty of rabbit trails. Dusty complains about his wife actually holding him accountable for the things he says he wants to do, Andrew and Dusty revisit the old-people-and-loud-music controversy from the previous episode, and the guys once again consider whether the Bible Belt Bros should officially become a Christian complaining podcast. At the heart of the episode is a simple challenge: Christians don't have to apologize for being Christians. Stand firm in what you believe. Use Scripture. Be willing to have difficult conversations. But before you start swinging the Sword of the Spirit at everybody around you, maybe check your heart and make sure you're trying to reach people rather than simply prove that you're right. Because "Thou Shall Be Nice" might not actually be the 11th Commandment... but that doesn't mean "Thou Shall Be a Jerk" is one either.
