Jesus and the Feast of Tabernacles
Send us Fan Mail The harvest festival in Leviticus is called the Feast of Tabernacles or Booths or temporary Shelters. It remembers God's provision for his people during their wilderness journey to Canaan and points to God's provision of eternal life in the person of the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth. John 7 is Christ's own declaration of his fulfilling the meaning of the Feast ceremonies. This sermon explores the theological significance of the Feast of Tabernacles, connecting the ancient Jewish celebration of God's provision and presence in the wilderness to the person and work of Jesus Christ. It argues that the festival rituals, specifically the water drawing and the lighting of lamps, serve as typological foreshadowings of Christ as the source of living water and the light of the world. The central message emphasizes that Jesus fulfills the deeper meaning of the feast by offering the Holy Spirit to believers after his glorification, thereby satisfying the spiritual thirst of humanity. The discourse traces the biblical narrative from the incarnation, where the Word tabernacled among us, to the eschatological hope found in Revelation, where God will permanently dwell with his redeemed people in the new creation.
