A Spotlight on the Scriptures: Amos 5:21-24: When Worship Rings Hollow And Love Goes Quiet
Send us Fan Mail This is a Spotlight on the Scriptures: Amos 5:21-24 I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; and the peace offerings of your fattened animals, I will not look upon them. Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps, I will not listen. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. Saints, hear me: God rejected the rituals of Israel—not because the songs were off-key or the offerings were insufficient, but because justice was missing in the streets. Their worship was loud, but their love was silent. Their hands were lifted in the temple but clenched in the marketplace. And God said, “I won’t accept it.” This is a warning to us today: you can’t shout hallelujah on Sunday and then curse your neighbor on Monday. You can’t study the Word in private and then step on your brother in public. Holiness is not just what happens in the sanctuary—it’s how you walk in society. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. knew this truth deep in his bones. That’s why, in the heart of his “I Have a Dream” speech, he reached back to the prophet Amos and thundered, “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.” Because real faith doesn’t just sing—it serves. It doesn’t just praise—it protests. It doesn’t just believe—it behaves. So let the church rise—not just in worship, but in witness. Not just in liturgy, but in love. Not just in songs, but in justice. Because God is not impressed by empty religion. He’s looking for righteousness that rolls.
