From Broken Feet to Wheelchair Half Marathon: Training, Perspective, & Pushing Forward – Episode 135
If you’re a pilot, active-duty military member, former athlete, or anyone who has had a setback derail the plan you had for yourself, this episode is a reminder that you can adapt without quitting. In this solo episode, I share a major update on my wheelchair half-marathon journey. After breaking both feet and learning I could not safely run the fall race I had planned, I decided to keep my commitment by training to complete it in a wheelchair instead. I finally connected with Mike DeLancey and Mike DeLancey Jr. at Wounded Warriors Abilities Ranch in Pinellas Park, Florida. They helped get me into an everyday chair so I can start training and compete. This effort is not an attempt to portray myself as a disabled athlete—I’m an able-bodied person working through a temporary injury. It’s about staying connected to a goal during a difficult season, learning from the adaptive sports community, and raising awareness and funds for Coast Guard Mutual Assistance. We are supporting Coast Guard Mutual Assistance’s Special Needs Grant Program, which can provide up to $3,000 to eligible Coast Guard families caring for a child with disabilities. Donate to support my wheelchair half-marathon efforts and Coast Guard Mutual Assistance: https://runsignup.com/blaise-cgma I break down what the first days in the chair have actually looked like: the learning curve of navigating uneven roads, the difference between an everyday chair and a racing chair, and why even a mile-and-a-half effort is far more technical than I expected. Whether you’re running, walking, rowing, biking, swimming, or pushing a chair, the goal is the same: build capacity gradually, stay consistent, and don’t let one bad hand convince you to fold.
