Through the Beatitudes, Jesus challenges our assumptions about happiness and reveals that a blessed life is not dependent on wealth, health, status, relationships, or favorable circumstances. Jesus reminds those who are mourning, struggling, overlooked, or working for justice that they are seen, known, honored, and held by God. He also invites every follower to turn toward God’s priorities by practicing mercy, humility, peacemaking, forgiveness, and justice. As we begin this journey through the Sermon on the Mount, may we learn to follow the way of Jesus, recognize where God’s kingdom is already breaking into the world, and discover a happiness rooted in God’s presence rather than our circumstances.
