  I don’t believe in defunding the military - or the police, for that matter. I believe in recruiting good people and training them to be honorable, highly-skilled protectors and defenders of life, liberty and justice for all. People like Sergeant First Class Yanira Gordillo. In this episode of CK Unmuted, Yanira and I talk about the recruiting process for enlisting in the U.S. Army. I never knew there were so many jobs associated with this branch of the service! I never knew that the army is the only branch of the military that assigns you your job (your MOS, Military Occupational Specialty) right from the get-go…before basic training. Possible assignments include: combat services; military intelligence; logistics and ordinance; the medical corps; JAG, and chaplaincy. Yanira says military life is not easy, but it’s made her who she is, and she’s proud of that. If I were thinking about enlisting, I’d want someone like Yanira to advise and apprise me of how the testing process works, how to prepare for it and what to expect as a member of the U.S. Army.   The Maestra in the Tower

  I was walking the labyrinth the other day at my favorite church. I was deep in thought when the carillon started to play a familiar Celtic tune. I stopped. I breathed in the music, then started to hum. There could not have been anything more sweepingly beautiful at that moment than hearing that tune while I made my way to the center of the labyrinth. There are few moments in life that have this sort of ineffable quality. I was bewitched in that moment by the carillon.   The Goodness of Grief

  I notice I’ve been interviewing a lot of women about healing recently - searching in our conversations for explanations about why I’m feeling a certain way, why people are acting in ways that are so antisocial, why I say “Fuck!” and “Asshole!” so much more than I used to. I think I’m grieving. Grief coach and death midwife Naila Francis would probably agree. In this episode of CK Unmuted, we talk about what grief is, where it comes from, and how to use it to grow and enrich our lives rather than stunt and impoverish them. We learn that authentic healing is not rushed, not dispatched with a check list. It’s not about reaching a feel-better destination and returning to “normal.” It’s about learning to carry our grief with compassion and care. Let the belly stay soft, heart softer to breathe where words can’t reach. Between the dew-lit dream of grass, the sun a hungry slice of sky, find your place — feet on earth, crown gold-spun, the memory of love slipping in. If water comes, greet it. If beauty stuns — shock of fuchsia roses, fan of fulsome green — bow down to the miracle of what this world still gives. Here is a home for sorrow and the smile that still blooms in your cheeks. You are not alone, living body held by living body, by all who’ve touched this ache, found honey in the opening — chest, throat, hands — wherever they let go. a thousand more moments will beckon. Let this one holy pause, silent listening, claim and name you a child of compassion. No more hard edges and flattened shapes. Cup your own bright face. Welcome, darling.
