He quoted the Lord’s warning: “Watch, therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.” Then he added the words that still pierce: “I thank everyone. I ask forgiveness of everyone. I also ask for prayers, so that God’s mercy may prove greater than my own weakness and unworthiness.”[1] This is the voice of a shepherd who knew the times are hard, as is our need for grace, and was never afraid to say so.
