The Knowledge Gap In Junior Basketball
In this episode of Coach to Coach: Fast Break Chats , we sat down with Daniel from Burn City Basketball to explore one of the biggest challenges in junior player development: the knowledge gap between junior and senior basketball. Daniel shares his own experience of discovering that having strong fundamental skills wasn’t enough to make the jump to higher levels. Concepts like spacing, angles, movement, physicality and basketball IQ often become critical at senior level, yet aren’t always introduced early enough in a player’s development. We unpack why coaches can start teaching these concepts from a young age without overcomplicating the game, and how developing players to understand why they are making decisions can build confidence and game awareness over time. The conversation also covers the importance of physical preparation, giving every player the confidence to shoot, and developing shot selection and decision-making through experience rather than simply waiting until players reach higher levels. Most importantly, Daniel challenges coaches to take responsibility for their own learning and recognise that player development is a long-term process. The goal isn’t to point fingers at what junior basketball is getting wrong, but to ask how we can grow better coaches and give young players the knowledge they need earlier.
