Before We Had Words: What Does a Baby Remember? What if the story of your life began long before you could tell it?
What if the story of your life began long before you could tell it? A newborn can't say, “I was frightened.” They can't say, “I felt safe when someone held me.” They can't tell us what it was like to leave the womb and enter the world. But does the absence of language mean the absence of experience? In this episode of the Cosmic Birth Podcast , we explore prenatal awareness and birth memory . David Chamberlain's work challenged conventional ideas about what babies are capable of experiencing and remembering. His research and collection of birth-memory accounts included children who described sensations and events surrounding their own births. We also explore the work of Thomas Verny and the development of prenatal and perinatal psychology, along with what developmental science tells us about the remarkable sensory and learning capacities of babies before and around birth. An incredible story is shared of a grown man who still recalls his own birth experience. Then we take a step further. What if our earliest experiences aren't remembered as stories? What if they become orientations toward life? Before we have words, might we already be learning: Is the world safe? Will someone come when I need them? Am I welcome? Can I trust? Do I belong? Is it safe to have needs? Can I reach for someone? And then we enter even more mysterious territory: the reports collected by Elizabeth and Neil Carman in Cosmic Cradle , including accounts from adults and children who describe experiences of consciousness before birth, choosing parents, previewing a life, and entering the womb. The Carmans describe more than 100 such stories and cross-cultural accounts from 108 cultures and traditions. Perhaps the most interesting question isn't simply: “Does a baby remember?” Perhaps it's: “What is the baby experiencing?” And perhaps an even deeper question is waiting underneath: What if the beginning of our story is not the beginning of our consciousness? In this episode, we explore the space between science, developmental psychology, birth experience, memory, consciousness and mystery. Because maybe your earliest story didn't begin when you learned to speak. Maybe it began before you had words. Prenatal awareness and early sensory development David Chamberlain and reported birth memories Thomas Verny and prenatal psychology The difference between autobiographical memory and early learning Birth as a profound transition for the developing baby How early experiences might become patterns or orientations rather than conscious memories The primal questions that may exist before language Reports of pre-birth consciousness and soul memory Cosmic Cradle by Elizabeth and Neil Carman The question of whether consciousness can exist independently of the brain What we know, what people report, and what remains a mystery Why healing doesn't necessarily require recovering a literal memory And ultimately: What does your life seem to remember even if you don't?
