Changing
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV) A good friend of mine from the West Coast of BC asked his 85-year old dad what was the biggest point of change he’d seen in his lifetime. After considering the question, he answered, “I remember when we sawed off the back end of our dugout canoe and nailed a board on so we could use a 5-horsepower outboard motor on it.” I thought about his answer. He was talking about a traditional way of life adjusting to changing times. He spoke of change through the eyes of an Aboriginal elder. Some changes are not ours to influence. They’ll override our protests and happen whether we like it or not. Other changes fall into the realm of our control. Our choices will go a long way in determining the situational outcomes in our own lives. Consider the lifestyle we choose. If we make godly choices, the result is a godly way of life. If we choose selfishly, the results are the total opposite. What changes do you want to see in your life? Do you need victory over addiction? Maybe healing of your marriage? Perhaps freedom from debt? Chain-breaking from guilt and unforgiveness? How about a whole new life focus? Some things aren’t totally our call, but our choices are the primary determinant when it comes to effecting real lasting change in our own lives. When we make the choice to let God into our lives, things change! No matter what mess our bent and twisted decision-making has landed us in, His forgiveness, mercy and unmerited grace can start that “change” process in you and me. It’s the best choice any one of us can make. — Kene Jackson Council Fire is a collaboration with Intertribal Life Ministries and Native Evangelical Fellowship of Canada.
