  Self-interest against the true King (Matthew 2)

  We see very quickly in Matthew 2, the contrast between two very different kings. One, King Jesus, who has come into the world vulnerable and innocent to save the world; the other, king Herod, a man who will do anything he can to selfishly hold onto power, even at the expense of innocent lives. In this sermon, we’re going to challenge self-interest, and how our God is a selfless, loving, kind and patient God. We see that when we look to Jesus – His life, His ministry, His sacrificial death. We, as His followers, try to emulate that selflessness, that care and kindness, because we love our God and our Saviour. We will also discuss how the world can be changed through our example, showing them a different way to live and a hope that we have, because our God, through innocence and vulnerability, is overcoming hearts, one at a time. We are the light and the salt of this world when we exemplify the characteristics of our God and preach the Gospel boldly to a world that looks to its own interest.

  Good news: a king is born (Matthew 1)

  Now that our time is finished in the patriarchs, we come to see the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham that through him the nations would be blessed. Also, we will see another covenant coming to full fruition which is the Davidic covenant of the King that would be seated on the throne of David for all time. This is truly the good news of the gospel: Matthew 1 announcing the lineage of King Jesus, saviour of the world, He, who would take away the sins of the people as prophesized from the beginning. We pray that this would be an incredible blessing to you and your family, and a great reminder for the hope that we have in Christ Jesus and the steadfast salvation that is ours by His name through faith.

  Jacob turned Israel (Genesis 25-37)

  Jacob being the final patriarch in Genesis is where we will end our time together to move on to Matthew. In this depiction of Jacob’s life, we will see a man who goes from being a heel-catching deceiver to a man who honours God. It has been a wonderful journey getting to know these heroes of the faith in the Old Testament, and to see that faith is a journey that we are on once we make a commitment to make God our God and receive Jesus as our Lord and our Saviour. And from that place, God takes hold of our lives, walking with us and growing us in our love and devotion toward Him. Another takeaway from our time in Genesis, and especially with Jacob, is we see that even through difficulties, deceptions and mistreatment, God is still at work in His people’s lives. He will certainly bring about good, and that good for us will be adding to our faith, our perseverance and devotion to our God. On the outside, Esau received wealth and comfort, but he was devoid of God whereas alternatively Jacob had a difficult life, God using that difficulty to transform him and to mould and shape him. By the time they meet again, Jacob has a transformed heart and becomes a more godly man. For us, this is good to see and understand that in our hardships, God is bringing us closer to Him and the world may go on and outwardly be doing very well but what is life without a relationship with God?

  Promised child Issac (Genesis 22-28)

  In this sermon, we will look at the life of Issac, Abraham’s son. We will come to quickly realise that God’s plan to crush the head of Satan needs no human help and cannot be stopped, and by that understanding, we have great peace and hope because our salvation is secured by God and cannot be taken away or undermined by us or others. We will also look at the relationship between God’s sovereign plan to save people and our choices and responsibilities that we must take in our personal lives, because if we do not take care, these wrong choices may have far reaching consequences, but alternatively making right choices in our lives will have good, intended circumstances long into the future.

  Father Abraham (Genesis 15-17)

  As we make our way through the patriarchs, looking forward to this promised son from Genesis 3, we come to the life and time of Abraham. In the story of Abraham, we get an even clearer picture of how it is that God has been saving people from the beginning. Sadly, at this time many, if not the whole world, had turned their back again on God, building the tower of Babel, as an affront against God’s command to go and multiply and subdue the earth, but also to make a name for themselves. In the chaos, God calls Abraham to follow after Him, to go to a land that is not his homeland and to establish himself there as God being his God in that place. From here we will see that Abraham was not a perfect man but he was a man who was growing in faith, and at a pivotal time in his life when he believed that God would give him a son, even though he and his wife were well over childbearing age. God credited his faith as righteousness. And by those few short words, God is showing that Abraham was completely forgiven, as was Abel, Seth and his line, even Noah, all those who placed their faith in God, trusting Him, they are forgiven. What a wonder! What a glory! How clear God has been in how He was treating people who come to Him in faith.
