Understanding Insulin Resistance: What Could Be Driving Your Blood Sugar? -Dr. Jason Shumard
Send a text for comments or topics ideas! If you've ever been told you have insulin resistance, prediabetes, or Type 2 diabetes and thought, "But WHY is this happening?" , this conversation is for you. It's easy to become focused on the numbers—blood glucose, A1C, insulin levels, weight—but understanding metabolic health involves looking at the bigger picture. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Jason Shumard , who has spent more than two decades helping people who feel frustrated or overwhelmed by traditional approaches to Type 2 diabetes. Rather than simply focusing on managing numbers, Dr. Shumard emphasizes helping people better understand their metabolic health and identify factors that may be contributing to insulin resistance. And I love this approach because understanding your health can be incredibly empowering. When we understand the "why," we can start making more informed decisions about the "what." In this episode, we discuss: What insulin resistance actually means and what is happening inside the body Some of the common factors that can contribute to insulin resistance Why insulin resistance can be more complicated than simply "eating too much sugar" The role that nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, and body composition can play in metabolic health Why two people with the same diagnosis may need very different approaches The importance of looking at the whole person rather than focusing on a single lab value Why understanding your metabolic health can change the way you approach your health How to move from feeling discouraged by your numbers to becoming more informed and engaged in your care One of the things I really wanted to explore with Dr. Shumard is this: What if knowing your numbers is only the beginning? Your A1C, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, cholesterol, triglycerides, and other markers can provide important information—but they're pieces of a much bigger picture. Instead of looking at a lab result and thinking: "What's wrong with me?" We can start asking: "What is this telling me about my health?" That shift—from judgment to curiosity—is an important part of the Direction Not Perfection philosophy. We don't need to understand everything overnight. We don't need to overhaul our entire lives. But we can become more informed, ask better questions, and start making small, sustainable changes that support our metabolic health. A Question to Take With You If you've been struggling with blood sugar, insulin resistance, prediabetes, or Type 2 diabetes, consider asking: "Do I understand what may be contributing to my insulin resistance—or am I only managing the numbers?" That question could be the beginning of a very different conversation with your healthcare team. As always, this episode is for education and conversation—not individualized medical advice. Your diagnosis, medications, lab results, and treatment plan should be discussed with your own healthcare provider.
