#72. What If You Don’t Want the "American Dream"?
In this episode, we dig into the growing shift away from the traditional path of buying a house, climbing the corporate ladder, grinding for decades, and eventually retiring. Inspired by a Moneywise article about Gen Z’s changing priorities, we explore what happens when freedom, flexibility, experiences, and meaningful work become more important than following the financial milestones previous generations were taught to chase. We also wrestle with the other side of that freedom: the importance of investing, building financial security, preparing for the unexpected, and creating income that can support you throughout your life. The traditional American Dream isn’t the only path to financial security. Homeownership, corporate promotions, and retirement at 65 may work for some people, but younger generations are increasingly building lives around flexibility, experiences, gig work, entrepreneurship, and other definitions of success. Living for today and planning for tomorrow don’t have to be opposites. You can travel, work less, take sabbaticals, or reject the traditional grind while still putting money aside and allowing compound growth to work in your favor. Your career doesn’t necessarily peak when you’re young. In many fields, experience creates opportunities later in life, which challenges the assumption that you need to sprint through your 20s and 30s so you can eventually stop working. Investing in yourself belongs in your financial plan. Education, skills, training, networking, and developing your own business or intellectual property can be just as important to your future earning power as traditional investments. Multiple income streams can bridge the gap between freedom now and security later. The goal doesn’t have to be seven jobs or endless side hustles. Building different sources of income can create more options, resilience, and the ability to design work around the life you actually want.
