--- "The Jade Rabbit" (玉兔捣药, yù tù dǎo yào) is one of China's oldest moon stories. Chinese poems from almost 2,000 years ago already say a white rabbit on the moon is making medicine. How did the rabbit get there? Our story comes from an old tale from India. The Chinese monk Xuanzang wrote it down about 1,300 years ago. In the old tale, the rabbit jumps into a fire to feed a hungry old man, and the old man, who is really a god, puts the rabbit's picture on the moon. In our story, the old man catches the rabbit just in time. Deep in a forest live three friends: a clever fox, a quick monkey, and a little white rabbit. One day a hungry old man sits down under a tree. "Can you find me something to eat?" The fox jumps at the river — SPLASH! — and brings back a big fish. The monkey climbs a tree and brings back an armful of fruit. But the little rabbit looks and looks, from morning until the sun goes down, and finds nothing at all... What will the rabbit give the old man? And who is this old man, really? A warm voice and a gentle pace, bringing classic Chinese myths and legends to little ones ages 4-10 — perfect for bedtime, travel, and family time. Chinese learners big and small are very welcome to tune in too!
