6: What It Really Takes for a Para-Athlete to Race Across America with Mohamed Lahna
Para-athletes are often shown one clear path: train for the Paralympics, compete in the events already built for para sport, and stay where the system knows what to do with you. But what if the race you really want sits outside that path? In this episode of the Endurance Gap, we sit down with Mohamed Lahna to talk about choosing those bigger challenges anyway. His 250 Triathlon Across America becomes the backdrop for a wider conversation about pursuing the race you actually want, even when there is no clear category, roadmap, or guarantee that the sport will be ready for you. Mohamed is a three-time Paralympian and Paralympic silver and bronze medalist. He has also swum across the Strait of Gibraltar, completed Marathon des Sables, competed at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii, and became the first adaptive athlete to earn the black t-shirt at Norseman Xtreme Triathlon. He is also the first athlete with a prosthesis to complete a coast-to-coast triathlon in this format. What's Discussed: (00:20) The scale of Mohamed's 250 Triathlon Across America. (02:17) The moment a huge goal stops being an idea and becomes a real commitment. (04:03) The prosthetic issues that began showing up during the desert run. (06:13) Which of the three disciplines pushed him the hardest. (16:14) The personal reason behind the project's fundraising mission. (24:20) Why Mohamed chose Marathon des Sables as his first race. (31:39) What races need to understand when para-athletes want to compete outside the Paralympic system. Listen to this episode of the Endurance Gap if you are a Para-Athlete wondering whether the races you want have to stop where the Paralympic path ends.
